It is 2019 and Resolutions are not just for people

Drucker offers wisdom on many fronts.

At this time of year people are making resolutions right and left. January is the month of self-improvement. Most of you will have made some or say that it is a waste of time. That is fine, but what about your business?

Get rid of it!

Peter Drucker, in four of his books, stresses the need to get rid of or abandon parts of your business that are no longer useful. He says effective executives “slough off the past that has ceased to be productive.” This allows the resources, especially the people resources that have been wasted on these non-productive efforts, to be put on the opportunities of tomorrow.

He says:

“Without systematic and purposeful abandonment, an organization will be overtaken by events. It will squander its best resources on things it should never have been doing or should no longer do. As a result, it will lack the resources, especially capable people, needed to exploit the opportunities that arise. Far too few businesses are willing to slough off yesterday, and as result, far too few have resources available for tomorrow.”

As you make those resolutions to lose weight think about the company as well. Does it need to trim down? It may keep you from having to hire other employees and may improve that bottom line, in more than one way.
