Message to the individual job seeker- If you can’t find a job it is your fault.

Everyone can learn new skills to help them be employable.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced a record setting number of jobs are available in the U.S., more than the number of job seekers looking. So if there are more jobs than applicants why are people not able to find work?

Personal responsibility

There are a lot of dynamics involved in why people are not finding work in an economy that has more jobs than people looking. But I am going to offer one explanation that may not be popular. That answer is personal responsibility. Many people today are not taking the responsibility for their careers. They are not learning new skills, or venturing into new fields, or moving to where jobs are more plentiful.

In today’s world jobs are not going to pursue applicants, applicants have to pursue jobs. Actually, let me revise that statement. Jobs may pursue applicants. Artificial intelligence can seek candidates with desired skill sets, but AI will not find you if you don’t have the relevant skills.

What skills?

It is not rocket science to Google the question “What skills are necessary for success in today’s workplace?” I did and found a plethora of information. Here are some of the articles I found:

6 Critical Skills for Tomorrow’s Workplace– Written by my friend Ira Wolfe, it stresses human skills rather than specific technical skills, things like curiosity, creativity, conscientiousness, critical thinking, collaboration, and agility. Ira’s contention is that with the rapidity that the world of work is moving, it is difficult to rely on one specific technical skill.

The 20 People Skills You Need To Succeed At Work– Writer Jacquelyn Smith stresses people skills that work regardless of job or industry.  Things like communication skills, patience, trust, agility, empathy and more are the things that transcend technical skills. These are, in most cases, learnable skills.

Top Skills You Will Need to Compete in Today’s Workplace– Dawn Rosenberg McKay emphasizes critical thinking, listening, and effective time management.

Future Friday: Nine Critical Skills for the Future of HR– I have written about this subject as well. If you go to the search box located to the right and type in job skills you will find about a dozen articles.

It is your responsibility

Whose responsibility is it to make sure you are trained and have the skills necessary for the working world? A lot of people have a piece of that. Your parents, your schools, your employers, and the government all have a stake in you being trained to take on a job. BUT, the ultimate responsibility is YOURS! If you are not willing to put in the effort and learn something new, or you are not willing to move or make other sacrifices to find the work you want then don’t expect it to be delivered to your doorstep.

By the way, this is true whether you are 25, 45 or 65 or more years of age.
