Three keys to being a great leader

Enthusiasm is important in leadership.

It is amazing where you can pick up nuggets of wisdom. I was reading a brief article from lifehacker on how to be an amazing party guest. (Yes, I know you think I am probably already an amazingly interesting guest, but I try to keep my game up.) The author, Heather Yamada-Hosley, offered three tips. I thought they would be great tips for a leader, or a manager, and even HR. Here is my interpretation of Heather’s tips.

Tip One

Show some enthusiasm.

Heather says you can be a great guest by showing how much you are enjoying the party. Compliment the food, the theme, their home, etc. You can do the same thing as a leader. Show you enthusiasm for the company, the project and the employee and their participation. Enthusiasm is contagious. Spread it around a little bit.

My friend, Steve Browne, uses enthusiasm in his job on a daily basis. He enjoys spreading it and his company’s employees appreciate it as well. It is undoubtedly one of the big reasons their engagement scores are high and their retention is through the roof, at a pizza company.

Tip Two

Be curious.

A quote I love to use says “To be interesting, be interested.” It works in all kinds of situations, especially leadership. Be genuinely interested in the people around you.

Tip Three

Show some gratitude.

As the party guest show your gratitude for the invitation. If nothing else it got you some free food and drink. As a leader you need to truly be thankful that someone follows you. Without followers you are not a leader. Without employees you are not a manager, or at least won’t be long in many cases. So be gracious and say “Thanks for being here. Thanks for contributing.”

If you follow these very simple but straight forward tips you will be good at many things and may be great as well.

Your post inspired two thoughts.

1. Dale Carnegie devoted a whole chapter in “How to Win Friends” on the power of a smile. Genuine enthusiasm involuntarily produces a genuine smile!

2. I am amazed at the power of the hand-written thank you note. In this day and age, receiving a piece of snail mail is quite memorable. A hand written note takes about five minutes to write out and mail….but the effect is powerful!
