Improve your leaders to improve your employees

Is your leadership the problem in company performance?

Is your leadership the problem in company performance?

In The Effective Executive Peter Drucker wrote that “the distance between the leaders and the average is constant.” That is a pretty powerful statement if you think about it for a minute. It focuses attention away from the employees and onto leaders.

Often we look at the poor performance of employees as the source of problems in our organizations and we develop programs to improve their performance. Drucker’s premise is that we need to improve our leaders. Since the distance between leaders and the average is a constant if you want to raise the average you need to raise your leaders.

This makes the selection and development of your leadership talent a critical step to your company’s success. What are you doing to improve the leadership in your organization? The next time a manager comes complaining about the poor performance of their employees have them look in the mirror.

“..if you want to raise the average you need to raise your leaders’. Thank you, Mike for a timely message. Just yesterday I was working with a client on coaching “team leads” know how to lead “even though they aren’t in charge”. Leadership isn’t about title or position.
