 Ambush Elections and Flash Mobs

Just last week, the National Labor Relations Board announced its intention to reissue a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for what many business leaders are calling  “ambush election” rules. These rules govern procedures  for determining the outcome union representation elections.  Union leaders are calling say the  proposed revisions would streamline the process and make it more fair.

One thing is sure.  The possibility  that your business might experience union organizing in 2014 is higher than ever, and the rules governing the process are about to become much more union friendly.

Labor organizations are also become more aggressive and creative in their approach to protest actions related to organizing.  It is increasingly common to see protests, short term one day strikes, and even flash mobs being used as tools for organizing.  It’s informative to look at some of these actions are part of your response plan preparation.

Here are links to three of the best flash mob protests actions that have taken place in recent years.

Operation “Hey Mackey at Whole Foods”

Hotel Protestors go Gaga

Here at Human Race Horses, we are obsessed with Lady Gaga.    In this flash mob protest at the Westin St. Francis hotel in San Francisco, members of the AFL-CIO group Pride at Work perform  an adaptation of Lady Gaga’s song “Bad Romance.” The event was organized to draw attention to a boycott called by the workers of the hotel who are involved in an on-going labor dispute.    According to the introductions of the video on YouTube,  “Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer activists put the song and dance together as a creative way to tell the hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ people from all over the country coming to San Francsico in June for Pride to stay out of the boycotted hotels”.

Raleigh Walmart Flash Mob

Some called this flash mob held at a Walmart store in Raleigh NC  the best labor protest flash mob ever.
