I read this line in a book about the future. The line was actually about providing space and time for creative conversation. I thought about that in other contexts and then came across Seth Godin’s blog post Never Enough. He said “There’s never enough time to be as patient as we need to be. Not enough slack to focus on the long-term, too much urgency in the now to take the time and to plan ahead. That urgent sign post just ahead demands all of our intention (and attention), and we decide to invest in, “down the road,” down the road.”How true is that? We all rush around and never really take time for conversation. We don’t converse with our significant others, our children, our friends, our employees, or our bosses. I think maybe problems would solved if we took time for conversation. The post did the other day Knowing Your Employees is more Important than You Think points out the importance of taking time for conversation.

So as you look around you ask yourself about the last time you have had a good conversation with the people you surround yourself with. You may find that by taking that time your relationships, your workplaces and your work day will be significantly improved.

To that end I am taking my daughter, who is in town for a visit, for a father-daughter dinner and we are going to have a casual conversation over a shared pizza.

GREAT suggestion, Mike (as usual!). I’ve taught my managers to spend about 10 minutes each morning with at least one of their direct reports, to find out about whatever is important to them at that time; spend those few minutes JUST LISTENING. It’s important in our professional life, and in our home life as well.
