This is the conclusion of my wrap up of the SHRM Atlanta conference. To me, as I have said before, a great deal of the value of attending a conference can be found in the marketplace. This gives you an opportunity to interact with vendors and learn about new innovations, new programs, and new offers. The marketplace in this conference gave the attendees that opportunity. In addition to the many companies dealing with benefits, payroll, credit unions, training, advertising, software and other companies offering employee based programs there were also education institutions presenting HR programs.
There were a couple of “different” booths. One was the Radio X booth, where you could get interviewed, which I did do. The other booth which I thought was different was the TweetMyJob booth, which was consistently tweeting from the conference. What made it stand out was the fact that it is a social media company set up solely for the purpose of putting job seekers and employers together via Twitter. If you are in HR and still don’t understand Twitter, then check this out.
One of the efforts of SHRM-Atlanta, and an emphasis of this conference was to encourage employers to hire a veteran. This dovetails with the effort of the City of Atlanta to get all employers to hire at least one employee. Both of these are noble efforts which should pay dividends for all parties involved.
The networking opportunities were ample, given that all meals were held in the marketplace. So after getting your food you could sit at a table and meet someone new. Many a business card was exchanged. It also gave people an opportunity to renew friendships made at previous meetings.
So kudos to the planners and volunteers who pulled off this well attended and well-structured conference. Make sure you put this on your calendar for next year.
