Free Preventive Care for Women: The Impact of New Regulations

On August 1 the Obama administration announced sweeping new guidelines for women’s health care which will change everything  from distribution of birth control pills to administration of breast exams. According to White House spokesperson Stephanie Cutter this will mean insured women will no longer pay anything out of their own pocket. As of Aug. 1, 2012, all private insurance plans will be required to cover women’s preventive services without a co-pay or deductible. This move is intended to help women have the chance to stop health problems before they start.

Beginning one year from today well -woman visits, screening for gestational diabetes, breast-feeding support, domestic violence screening and all FDA approved birth control methods, including emergency contraception such as the morning-after pill will be covered deductible and co-pay free. White House advisors say they don’t believe the changes will impact premiums, but ultimately, that decision will be made by insurance companies. And does anyone out there believe that insurance companies will be willing to absorb the cost of this??

The question I have is why are preventative procedures for women offered at no cost and ones for men are not?

We will have to see what the impact of this new regulation will be. And we will have to be watching out in other areas as well. On August 4 it was announced that the Federal government had passed 608 new rules and regulations that are estimated to cost employers $9.5 billion. According to US News and World Report “At Tuesday’s GOP Senate caucus lunch, the lawmakers said that they will renew their efforts, supported by business groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In a memo Barasso handed out to the lawmakers, he claimed that the administration in July only has put in $9.5 billion in new regulatory costs by proposing 229 new rules and finalizing 379 rules. Among those he cited were EPA, healthcare reform, and financial regulatory reform rules.”

And you wonder why businesses get frustrated.
