Yesterday I discussed the gloomy employment picture in my home state of Georgia. I mentioned that there was a bright spot that I wanted to talk about. It is called the “Hire One” programand it is a model of success that other metro areas can use as a model for building employment. The initiative is a partnership between Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, Inc., the Atlanta Business League and SHRM-Atlanta. Ed Baker and the Atlanta Business Chronicle are big supporters and provide weekly highlights of the successes.
The initiative started on February 22, 2011 when Mayor Reed, in a speech on the State of the City, challenged the 150,000 businesses in the Metro Atlanta area to hire just one employee in 2011. He said this effort would have a significant impact on the unemployment rate for Atlanta, which is at nearly 10%. With the effort of the organizations involved and with the continued leadership of Ed Baker and the Atlanta Business Chronicle the HIRE ONE initiative has reached the milestone of 10, ooo hires by 1,100 companies.
The leaders of the initiative are convinced that this kind of effort is vital to the success of the effort to reduce unemployment in the Atlanta Metro area. Mayor Reed has exhorted companies to redouble their efforts and to hire at least one new employee. This effort has received national recognition.
I think it is a fantastic way to get a community involved in improving a situation that effects all businesses and residents. If your community is suffering you may want to consider such a program. It can be run on many different levels. Although not an actual resident of the City of Atlanta, I am a resident and business owner in the metro area. I am happy to see such effort. I am also proud that SHRM-Atlanta has taken a leadership role in this process. You too can get your SHRM chapter involved in such an effort in addition to your company.
