If you have been watching the news, listening to the radio, or paying attention to the Internet you know that there is a big process going on in Congress and the White House to cut the budget, rein in spending and funding the government. (If you have not been watching this you may be surprised by this information. And I am continually amazed by the number of people who are clueless to what goes on in the world beyond American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, The Bachelor/Bachelorette and Jersey Shore, etc.) According to an article in CNN Money called 2011 Budget Cuts Revealed one of the biggest departments to be cut was the U.S. Department of Labor. So my first thought was “Great maybe they will cut back on some of those inspectors they hired to knock on businesses’ doors.”
Well no such luck. The cuts are not coming at the expense of the compliance arena. The programs that are being affected deal with employment for the unemployed, teens, seniors and green jobs. Much of what is being cut is available grant money for these programs rather than operational expenditures. You can see the actual cuts by clicking this link, Continuing Resolution Reductions.
So if you run a program that helps create jobs for teens, or helps retrain dislocated workers, or helps seniors get back in the workforce, or trying to help the environment by creating GREEN jobs then you are going to be disappointed and short of money. For the rest of us the USDOL will continue stepping up their enforcement efforts because now they need the money more than ever. Can you say the word FINES? Better make sure they have no reason to fine you by making sure you HR processes are as clean as can be. (Hint: Hire a good consultant. Yes I know this is a shameless plug, but what the heck I need money too.)
