What Is Your Biggest HR Challenge?

by Michael Haberman on February 9, 2011 · 2 comments

I was asked that question last night by a student in an HR Fundamentals class I teach. I gave him my answer, but rather than telling you what my response was I wanted to ask you that same question and get your responses. This can be answered by HR pros or any other person in the company.

So, What is the biggest HR challenge that you have in your company? You can also answer, if you prefer, What is the biggest challenge HR has as a profession?

My biggest challenge is time management. Like most companies, mine has scaled back on non-revenue producing departments. We have a mighty skinny HR department (3 corporate HR managers for 3400 employees). There are not enough hours in the day to be caught up with what is required, much less what we’d like to do. This often leaves us in more reactive than proactive. I am a workaholic by nature, so I tend to work 11-12 hours a day and some on the weekends. Doesn’t leave much time for life outside work . . .

The toughest for me is creating an organization where our employees truly feel they have a voice. Since most organizations, including mine, are fairly hierarchical it is imperative that front-line staff feel important. We’ve taken steps to make that happen, but each department leader must leverage HR for support and make that connection real every day.
